Measurement Guide
Neck – The circumference of the base of the neck.
Chest/Bust – The circumference of the fullest part of the chest. The body should be relaxed and the tape held loosely and parallel to the floor.
Ribcage – The circumference of the torso directly below the bust on women or the pectoral muscles on men.
Waist – The waist is above the hipbones and below the rib cage. In men it is usually directly over the navel. The waist measurement is a snug but not tight measurement.
Hips – The hip measurement is the circumference of the fullest part of the hips.
Neck to waist (front) – The measurement from the hollow in the collar bone to the waist.
Across shoulders – The distance from the end of one shoulder bone to the other. It is taken in the front and back.
Width of front – The measurement across the check from the point where the arms join the body.
Width of back – The measurement across the back from the point where the arms join the body.
Height of dart – The measurement from the base of the neck to the fullest part of the bust or chest.
Shoulder – The distance from the base of the neck at the side to end of the shoulder bone.
Armscye (or armhole) – The measurement around the arm and over the shoulder where the arm joins the body.
Underarm to waist – The distance from under the arm to the waist.
Bust span – The distance from bust point to bust point.
Head around – The circumference of the head.
Arm (out to elbow) – The distance from the shoulder bone to the elbow.
Arm (out to wrist) – The distance from the shoulder bone to the wrist with a slightly bent elbow.
Arm (in to wrist) – The measurement from the point where the arm joins the body to the wrist.
Bicep – The measurement around the flexed bicep.
Elbow – The measurement around the bent elbow.
Wrist – The circumference over the wrist bone.
Waist to floor – The distance, front and back, from the waist to the floor.
Waist to knee – The distance, front and back, from the waist to the middle of the knee.
Neck to floor – The distance, front and back, from the neck to the floor.
Length of hip – The distance from the waist to the fullest part of the hip.
Inseam – The measurement from crotch to ankle bone.
Outseam – The measurement on the side from waist to ankle bone.
Girth – The distance from one shoulder through the legs and back to the shoulder.
Crotch – When the person is seated on a hard flat surface, this is the distance from the waist to the surface.
Complete crotch – The distance from the centerfront waist through the legs to the centerback waist.
Thigh – The circumference of the largest part of the calf.
Calf – The circumference of the largest part of the calf.
Above knee – The circumference directly above the knee.
Below knee – The circumference directly below the knee.
Ankle – The circumference of the ankle over the ankle bone.
Shoe – Shoe size should include width. Make a tracing of the stockinged foot on the back of the measurement chart.
Hat – Divide the head circumference by 3.14. A hat size represents the diameter of the head.
Dress – Refer to standard size charts.
Suit – This corresponds roughly to chest measurements and height. Refer to standard size charts.
Shirt – Men’s shirts are measured by neck and sleeve length. The neck measurement is taken at the base of the neck. The sleeve measurement is taken from the center back neck at the top vertebra, over the shoulder and to the wrist.
Trousers – Men’s trousers are measured by waist and inseam.
Glove – Measure around the hand and over the knuckles.
